1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
The Word is revealed to be Jesus in verse 17.
The Word is repeated 3 times in verse 1 alone and so it is important to take a closer look at it.
The Word reflects the utterance and promise of God the Father in the old testament and embodiment of God's truth because for the Jews God’s truth is often referred to as the Word. In fact some Jewish groups referred to God as the Word because they thought his name should not be said out of sheer reverence to him. It was already outright blasphemy to say god or yaweh in any improper usage.
And so john enters jesus by referring to him as how both the jews and non-jews referred to God stating he is indeed God who walks among us. Not a God, but God.
Now before i go further, lets just look recognize compare to genesis. Yes it also starts with in the beginning, but it mentions light and life and speaks on the word of god
God’s word went out in verse 3, let there be light, and after light there was life. And as john says thrrough it all, Jesus was there, from the beginning there.
Genesis spoke about the physical ... This is physical light, the first step in bringing order, life, and beauty out of chaos. let their be light so that we may see and fully experience life.
In John, there is an additional overlay, let there me spiritual light, jesus the light of the world, so we may fully experience spiritual life. Both physical and spiritual, without light that is jesus, life also cannot flourish.
Now I want to akin Jesus light to the sun just so that we can grasp something, some understanding of the sheer power and warmth and energy and necessity of his light.
And i want to akin in to people. Sometimes people who are christians they are kind, there are super nice, yes they are proned to sin but they may thrive to be good. They have a light i believe, but their light is more akin that of a candle. It can just easily flick away. Sometimes in a relationship the darkness of one person can smother the light of a person. Can that happen with the sun?
I had a friend who was just full of joy. Oh waw. She was bubbly and positive and i cant really say i am a naturally bubbly person. Sometimes i would talk and people would think i am being sarcastic. And im like.. No im.. Im not. And one day i swear someone crossed her, and this young lady, bless her heart turned into the most vengeful, somewhat entitled person ever. And i knew the reason which made it even more perturbing. But in reflection i realised she was just proud and unforgiving. And trust me i struggle with my pride but i realise i am a forgiving person because God has given me a lot to forgive. A lot! And so it becomes easier not just to fogrive but to go to him when it gets difficult again. On my own i am but a candle and someone or something that make my light flicker or dust it away but with my source being the sun, i mean, come on.
... where is the comparison?
Jesus is the true Light, far greater than any earthly source. He is:
The light that gives truth, is truth and gives spiritual life
Light can also come in the form of fire, to which the sun is basically a great ball of fire and fire purifies and exposes.
Fire cleanses impurities
Spiritually, Jesus does both—Like light Jesus reveals truth and like fire He purifies our hearts, convicting us of sin and guiding us into righteousness.
Now it says the light shines in the darkness in the passage so lets talk on darkness....
Where light brings life, darkness is its opposite—a void of nothingness. Before salvation, many feel that emptiness, that void.
Struggling with meaning or purpose and feeling the weight of guilt or sin
Darkness also often represents:
Danger
Despair
Depression
Deception
And ultimately, separation from God
When people do things "in the dark," it usually means something hidden or shameful. Spiritually, it points to sin and the fallen nature of the world.
So please, just leave here knowing Spiritual light is so much more than brightness. It means:
Illumination of truth
Wisdom and discernment
Hope and salvation
The presence of God in our darkest hours
Breaking chains
and bringing true, clarity, and joy even in suffering.
You can obtain this light through salvation.
